Indexing status
is not a submission receipt

A URL is indexed when a search engine has stored it and may show it. A successful submit only means the engine accepted the notice. Indexaro keeps those states separate on Google, Bing, and Yandex.

What “indexed” means

Google’s help center uses indexed to mean a URL is stored and eligible to be shown. That is not a rank, and it is not a click. Search Console’s URL Inspection tool is the per-URL check for a property you verified. The Page indexing report lists groups of pages. It cannot be filtered down to one URL.

How Indexaro records a URL

Each URL is stored once per engine. The states below are Indexaro’s labels. They follow the engine’s report when a status check runs, and they follow the submission response when it does not.

StatusWhat it means
PendingThe URL is queued in Indexaro. No engine has accepted it yet.
SubmittedThe engine accepted the notification or the URL is known but not confirmed in the index. This is a receipt, not a ranking.
IndexedA check on a site you own reported the URL as stored and eligible to be shown. Google’s URL Inspection verdict PASS maps here.
ExcludedThe engine reported the URL out of the index, including noindex, a robots block, a duplicate, or a canonical that points elsewhere. On Google, a NEUTRAL inspection verdict maps here.
FailedThe submission or the status check did not complete. The URL is not marked indexed.

A notice is not the index

Bing IndexNow documents HTTP 200 as “the engine received the list.” Yandex Webmaster can accept a recrawl and still report the URL as not in the index. Google’s Indexing API is narrower still: Google documents it for JobPosting pages and for livestream pages that contain BroadcastEvent inside a VideoObject. The default publish quota is 200 requests per day per Google Cloud project, for onboarding and testing. Extra service accounts do not make an ordinary article eligible.

For pages outside that API, Indexaro uses sitemaps, Search Console on a verified property, and the status check. The Google Indexing API page states the same limit. The free URL check looks at HTTP, robots, and canonical tags. It does not claim an official index status.

Prices on the public plans are Free $0, Pro $29/month, and Agency $99/month. This page does not report an index rate. A rate needs an engine, a sample, a date, and a definition of indexed.

Google

URL Inspection is the per-URL status for a property you own. The Page indexing report cannot be filtered to one URL. “URL is on Google” is not a promise of a ranking.

Bing and IndexNow

An IndexNow HTTP 200 means the engine received the URL list. It does not mean Bing has indexed the page. Webmaster tools are the status check for a verified site.

Yandex

Yandex Webmaster is the status source for a host you have added. A recrawl request is a notice. The host report is the status.

Common questions

What does indexing status mean?

Indexing status is whether a search engine has stored a URL and may show it. It is not the same as a submission receipt, a crawl, or a ranking.

What is the difference between submitted and indexed?

Submitted means the engine accepted a notification, or the URL is known and not yet confirmed in the index. Indexed means a status check on a site you own reported the URL as stored and eligible to be shown.

Does the Google Indexing API set indexing status for every page?

No. Google documents that API for eligible JobPosting pages and livestream pages that contain BroadcastEvent in a VideoObject. Ordinary pages are outside it. The default publish quota is 200 requests per day per Google Cloud project for onboarding and testing.

Does a site: search show indexing status?

A site: query is a rough public check. It is not URL Inspection, and it is not a per-URL status from Bing or Yandex Webmaster.
