Yandex Indexing for International SEO: A Practical Guide

Technical SEOJuly 1, 2026 8 min read

How Yandex discovers and indexes pages, when it matters for international SEO, and how to submit URLs via the Yandex Webmaster API.

When Does Yandex Matter?

Yandex is the dominant search engine in Russia and several CIS countries (Kazakhstan, Belarus, Uzbekistan, Turkey to a lesser extent). If your site targets Russian-speaking audiences, e-commerce in CIS markets, or international brands with regional storefronts, Yandex indexing is not optional.

Even for primarily English sites, Yandex adds engine diversity — and Indexaro submits to Yandex alongside Google and Bing in a single workflow.

How Yandex Discovers Pages

Yandex uses its own crawler (YandexBot) with separate crawl budget, indexing rules, and quality signals from Google. Discovery paths include:

  • Following internal and external links
  • Reading XML sitemaps submitted via Yandex Webmaster
  • Receiving URL notifications via the Yandex Webmaster API
  • IndexNow (Yandex is an IndexNow participant)

Yandex Webmaster Setup

  1. Create an account at webmaster.yandex.com
  2. Add and verify your site (DNS, HTML file, or meta tag)
  3. Submit your XML sitemap under "Sitemap files"
  4. Review the "Indexing" report for crawl errors and exclusions

Submitting URLs to Yandex

Sitemap submission is the baseline — Yandex reads sitemaps on its own schedule, which can take days for new sites.

Yandex Webmaster API allows programmatic URL submission for verified hosts. This requires OAuth credentials and API integration — similar complexity to Google's Indexing API.

IndexNow provides a simpler path: a single POST notifies Yandex (and Bing) simultaneously. Indexaro handles IndexNow and Yandex API submission together.

Yandex-Specific Considerations

  • Regional targeting — Yandex weighs geo signals heavily; use hreflang and regional content where relevant
  • Host preference — configure www vs non-www in Webmaster to avoid duplicate indexing
  • Cyrillic content — Yandex excels at Russian NLP; ensure proper charset and language tags
  • Separate from Google — being indexed on Google does not mean Yandex has indexed the same URL

Checking Yandex Index Status

In Yandex Webmaster, use "Pages in search" to see indexed URL counts. For individual URLs, the site: operator in yandex.com search works similarly to Google and Bing — though Webmaster data is more reliable.
